Camus asserts that the bid to understand the world by humans only brings forth a confrontation of thoughts and is often futile. Also the fact that humans, although living on earth lack the ability to predict the future and can only for the moment adds to the absurdity of human existence. Another element that makes human existence absurd is the feeling of independence, rebellion, and passion. Human beings live in a world where the notion of freedom seems quite high, for example; human beings believe they can make own decisions at will. The twist in this, however, is that wrong decisions often lead to condemnation. In addition, nature somehow has a way of interfering with this freedom (Taylor 7). Raphaels Portrait Leo X with Cardinals Guilio de Medici Essay In Nelson Minnichs religious interpretation of Raphaels famous portrait of Pope Leo X, Minnich first begins with the very basics of the portrait; what is contained within its canvas and why it is there. From small clues such as these, he is able to lay the foundation for which theories and conclusions can be based. He first points out the location of the figures in the painting. Minnich believes that they are in a large room, seated before a green cloth on the wall, or cloth of honor. There is some speculation, however, as to exactly where this room is located. Several theorists, as well as he, believe that the location is a room in the Vatican, perhaps the library. He points out that there is reflection of a window in several objects in the portrait, allowing more narrowing down the location even further and debunking the library idea. With the location not quite known, Minnich moves on to the color scheme. He points out that the painting is known for its use of red on the robes of the pope and cardinals, the furniture, and the table coverings. Red was considered a papal color, so this is not unusual in a papal portrait. What is unusual however, is the other two men accompanying the pope in the portrait who were painted in later. Minnich identifies these cardinals as Luigi deRossi, Leos first cousin, and Guilio deMedici, another of Leos cousins. Leo was extremely close with Luigi and this is shown by Luigis hands on Leos chair. Guilio was considered Leos right hand man, and is depicted as so in the portrait by being almost a part of Leos right arm. Minnich also points out that it is ironic that Guilio is depicted as a cardinal because his clerical status wasnt determined at the time. From here we move on to another important item in the portrait, the bell. This specific bell was made for Leo after his election and is a hand bell used for praying. Minnich explains that its presence is most likely to represent Christ in the portrait. Next to the bell is a magnifying glass which Minnich says is merely there to represent the popes nearsightedness. Leo would have needed the glass to read the next item on the table, his bible. The bible is obviously not an unlikely item, being that it is a portrait of a pope, but it is where the bible is opened to that is of importance; St. Johns Gospel. Minnich tells us that Leos first baptismal name was Giovanni, a name that came from this gospel. After inspecting the painting for obvious clues and symbols, Minnich is ready to discuss the possible reasons for the paintings existence. The first being the obvious, that it is merely a papal state portrait. He points out several reasons that this could be a wrong assumption. The painting was kept in Florence and not in Rome, like most papal portraits. It was much smaller than an average state portrait. And the most obvious objection was that there were three people present in the painting, which is highly unusual for a portrait. Minnich then suggests the possibility that Raphael was merely painting a family portrait. But then he quickly points out that no other of Leos relatives was involved. He also points out that the items involved, a bell, the bible, are not usually in state portraits. With the state portrait theory clearly discredited, Minnich tells readers of the theory that the painting is simply an occasional piece, saying that it was painted just to be displayed at the wedding of the Medici and Valois houses in lieu of the pope and his two relatives not being able to make the festivities. Minnich states that the clothing in the portrait clearly leads one to believe that the painting was done months before the wedding. The pope and his relatives would have to have known far in advance that they could not make the occasion and Luigi deRossi was actually recognized as being present the day of the wedding. He says that occasional pieces are not usually so planned out, but does however, mention that a lot would be explained had Raphael begun painting a portrait and then suddenly attempted to switch it into a wedding gift and add the two cardinals. Not fully committed to a purpose, Minnich takes a quick look at the eligious meaning behind the portrait. He mentions that Josephine Jungie has the most persuasive theory on the painting. She believes that the bible represents the stage of the Holy spirit, the bell represents the new age, and that Leo looking to the left represents his looking to the arrival of the new age, and thinking about his own appointment as an Angelican Pastor who will lead the Church in the final age. Minnich points out that this is persuasive because Leo was attempting to take on the roles that an Angelican leader would, yet points out the Jungie failed to find reason for the two cardinals in the portrait. He closes with admitting to readers that no one will ever really know Raphaels true intentions behind this famous painting. All we have is historical facts, symbols, ideas, and of course opinions to make up the reason for Pope Leo Xs portrait with Cardinals Luigi deRossi and Guilio deMedici.

The Tragic Event Of The Holocaust History Essay The Holocaust remains the worlds greatest and most tragic event that targeted a specific group of the human race. The absolute inhumanity of the Holocaust still confounds people, even today. People were systematically killed, tortured, and murdered. It was one of the twentieth centurys most unfortunate events that had occurred by prevalent anti-Semitism and outright fear. The Germans blamed the Jews for Germanys defeat in World War I, some even claiming that German Jews had betrayed the nation during the war. The Jews had previously been subject to all kinds of earlier religious prejudices. From the 1870s onwards a new, racial anti-Semitism was added to this. Thus began the widespread demonization of the Jews. There were many conspiracy theories about the Jews being the reason for Communism. The Nazis were claiming that the Jews were enemies of Germany. But most German Jews were actually pro-German and had fought for Germany in World War I. Many Jews were hesitant to leave Germany even if they were able to. The fear of Communism was a powerful force which worried many people, in parts of Central Europe and Southern Europe. This was brutally exploited by politicians. Adolf Hitler, Nazi leader, attacked the well established roles the Jews in German society. Hitler referred to the Jews as a plague and a cancer. He accused Jewish population for the state Germany was left in at the end of World War I. It was then terms such as extermination and extinction began being used in relation to the Jews. Hitler claimed that the Jews had gained economic. He claimed that the Jews had achieved economic supremacy and the ability to manipulate and command the media to their own advantage. He talked about the need to destroy their powerful economic positions and if necessary by physical means. Hitler also wanted to purify Germany; he wanted to populate Germany with the Aryan race, this goal couldnt be reached unless all Jews were gone which also included Hispanics, Blacks, gypsies, Socialists, German Communists, Social Democrats, Jehovahs Witnesses, as well as homosexuals. The Germans concentrated the regional Jewish population and forced them to live under miserable conditions in city districts called Ghettos. The Ghettos isolated Jews. They were separated from Jewish communities and from the non-Jewish population. The Germans established at least 1,000 ghettos in German, Poland and the Soviet Union alone. The Germans believed that the establishment of ghettos was a temporary measure to segregate and have power over the Jews. They reckoned that the Jews would only stay there while the Nazi leadership in Berlin debated options and ways to reach the goal of removing the Jewish population. On November 9, 1938, the Nazis unleashed programs against Germany Jews. Jews were attacked and Jewish property was vandalized and almost every synagogue in Germany was either damaged or destroyed. The treatment of Jews, was questioned when the Nazis invaded Poland, where about two million Jews resided. This was the first time; Jews were arrested in large amounts and transported to Nazi concentration camps. They were only released if they promised to move out of the area soon, or transferred their property and valuables goods to the Nazis. Approximately 20,000 concentration camps were established by the Nazis between the years of 1933 and 1945. The Jews in the concentration camps were led to believe that they would stay for a while, but these camps were primarily used as extermination camps for mass murder. Most prisoners died under cruel and painful labor conditions. Children were especially vulnerable in the Holocaust. The Nazis Germans killed as many as 1.5 million Jewish children. They killed Jewish children with disabilities living in institutions, the physically and mentally ill. Polish Jew children were also killed as well as children living in the Soviet Union. Jewish adolescents had a greater chance at survival because they could be sent to work at a labor camp. Forced labor camps were where prisoners underwent exhausting labor conditions, famine, starvation and exposure to very low or extremely high temperatures. Horrible medical experiments were conducted in forced-labor camps, primarily aimed to reinforce the German military personnel, but also to develop and test vaccines for the prevention and treatment of contagious diseases and to promote the racial and ideals of the Nazi theory. All experiments conducted in the concentration camps were done without the prisoners consent, and typically resulting in loss of life. The Nazi doctors performed outrageous and shocking surgical procedures. Prisoners were tested on while they were being held in concentration camps. Most of these experiments had to do with the improvement of the German military. Some experiments that were conducted for the Nazi high command are: Hypothermia experiment- Dr. Sigmund Rascher at Birkenau, Dachau and Auschwitz were going to attempt freezing some of the victims. To establish how long it would take to lower the body temperature to death and second how to best resuscitate the frozen victim. The person was put in an icy vat of water or to put outside naked in sub-zero temperatures. Sun lamp- victims were placed under sun lamps which would burn the skin. Genetic experiments- females were being impregnated by genetically modified specimen. Transplants- victims body parts were removed and attached to other parts or grown elsewhere.

INTRODUCTION As years passed by, new generations starter to grow. Our world right now is different than before. At this time, modern technologies are patronized by people specially students because of its advantages. Without looking on the other side, these innovations can also cause and bad effects. Because of technology, new thing were created that sustains and lightens human work. Computers were created because of technology. Computers were the greatest thing ever invented by man itself. Some researcher wants to know the effects of playing online games on the academic performances of the students.The reason why the researcher have chosen this particular research topic was know the advantages of playing computer games on the academic performances of the selected high school students. Online games can have bad effects on people’s life specially the learners. Online game addiction has become popular in society which seriously influences children both physically and mentally. S tudents can spend most of their time sitting by the computer, playing games, being hooked up in playing from early morning until midnight without eating anything.This leads to the lack of physical activities among the students which makes them less active and getting low grades from school. They ignore everything around them, talking no one and have no interaction with the outside world. They even tell lies to their parents like going outside without permission, which becomes a bad habit that needs to be prevented. Development in technology brings many things that people don’t have many years back. One of these things is online gaming that is provided by the internet. According to Wikipedia, Online game is a video games played over some form of computer network, using a personal computer, video game console or hand held game onsole. This network is usually the internet or equivalent technology, but games have always used whatever technology was current: modems before the Internet, and hard wired terminals before modems. The expansion of online of online gaming has reflected the overall expansion of computer networks from small local networks to the Internet and the growth of Internet access itself. Online games can range from simple text based games to games incorporating complex graphics and virtual worlds populated by many players simultaneously.Many online games have associated onl ine communities, making online games a form of social activity beyond single player games. Online gaming one of the widely used leisure activities by many people including students. Students who are playing these online games said that they are playing these games just for fun, to keep away from the heat of the sun, without knowing that there are a lot of effects of playing these games that are more that what they think. Playing online games, according to some research is beneficial.It enables the mind of the players to be more active especially those puzzle-based games. It helps the player to come up with decisions in tight situation, especially those adventure games that keep the players to be alert, active and strategic. An online game affects the management of the students. Students with addiction to it give more time on online gaming that studying. For the minors, it can affect their behavior. They might imitate that characters on the games which can make them think of violent actions. Because sometimes character on online game are violent. Over 35% of the respondents stated that they play at least one hour per week. The trend toward increased online game and other interactive digital media usage does not appear to be going away. The upcoming high school students are even more likely to be tightly tried to their technology than students are today. The current generation is exceedingly comfortable with technology and electronic entertainment.One study noted that the average American youngster now spend one-third of each day with some form of electronic media. It was found that there are â€Å"sufficient studies with sufficient consistency† to back up several important finding (Anderson, et al. , 2003, p. 93). Online games violence is linked to aggression in the short term. Cross-sectional studies have been able to how a correlation between long term exposures to online games violence and real world violence.A few longitudinal studies are also able to suggest that online game exposure has long term effects on aggression. It should be noted that Craig Anderson, on of the author of this study has been criticized for overstating the data on online games and its link to aggression and violent behavior. One of the online games here in Philippines that students are really addicted with it, is World of Warcraft also known as DOTA.Playing this game also triggers the player to lose his/her temper and values, it is because of the different languages used during the game or what we called â€Å"trash talks†. Trash talks such as foul languages can really lose their temper and values. As a result, the both sides will fight against each other. Online game is an outlet for the player to be who they really are inside unlike in the real world; we are expected to act a certain way or do thing a certain way. In online game, a player can be anything and everything they’ve ever imagine or believed.This can be extremely harmful because players have said they forget about what’s going on around them or dealing with real life situation or problems. When gamer starts to play the online game more often and longer, it can have some lasting effects on their life. Students hav e reported relationships failures to their parents and low school performance due to their online game addiction. Some of them have become addicted, they’ve actually lost their concentration in their studies and resulting into school life failures and worst of all they always have final grades which are so badly and cause for them to retain.Long term online game addiction can have lasting bad effects on the gamer’s health. Gamers become depressed because the virtual world and genuine line between real world and virtual world. They tend not to ask out for help because their ashamed. They are hesitating that the game has so ashamed their life is out of their control due to an online games. Aside from addiction, gambling is also one of the results of online games to the students here in the Philippines. The country’s President Ninoy Aquino said that â€Å"Online games is another source of gambling here in our country†.Aquino sited a particular place where ga mbling in online games is rampant. â€Å"Parents should watch out for their children because most common participants in internet gambling are student form High Secondary have and College even Elementary pupils (â€Å"Television†, 2012) It can very difficult for someone, who had not playing an online game, to understand how someone becomes addicted. Addicted gamers change their way of thinking about reality. Everything in the real world starts to look fake but the game becomes reality. Addicted gamers sometimes lose everything and have to begin their lives over in a sense.They have to start getting back the basics and work back into life. For some with help that thinking can go back to normal. While others need a lot more help. There is online gamers anonymous which is a 12 step self help group. They have a 24 hours meeting place online in a forum setup. In some communities, there’s place a gamer can go to work through and addiction. One social problem that has been observed is that the Internet cafe has become mainly game centers.About one-half to two-thirds of the computers in a typical Internet cafe, according to one study, are devoted to games (violent and gory games). The use of the remaining computers was roughly split between browsing, email, online chat, word processing and research. The Internet cafes have become not just game centers. They are becoming centers off addiction among the youth, mostly boys, including elementary school pupils. Fidel Castro's History Will Absolve Me and the Cuban Revolution - Essay Example This paper will address the circumstances surrounding the revolution and Castro’s justification for the revolution. An analysis of Batista’s leadership in Cuba will give grounds on how Castro appeared. Batista started as an army officer but rose up the ladder of ranks in the army with time. He received a commendation from the American government representative that he stood out among the Cubans and possessed a great deal of the ability to rule. This made him realize that he would lead the people in his way. Events led to one another, and eventually in 1942 he won elections and become president. His rule was very oppressive, and he concentrated on maintaining his relationship with the American government but not serving the people1. In 1952, he forcefully grabbed the position of general and imposed himself as a dictator on the Cuban people. This came after signs that he was going to lose an election. Batista’s reign greatly oppressed the people, and he amassed wea lth for himself while the common poverty levels increased among the Cuban people2. Castro and his colleagues rose to fight for change in the society. Castro believed in communism and was determined to change the condition in Cuba. In 1953, he led an attack on the military camp in Santiago3. Together with others who realized the kind of oppression the Cuban people were facing he intended to overthrow the tyrant Batista and establish communism in Cuba. Unfortunately, the attack failed, and the organizers faced the strong vengeance from Batista. A large group of them died in the attack while those who survived ended up in custody. Castro defended the group in court, and only a few of them ended up in jail. However, his own case proved difficult to handle because the justice system denied him the freedom to exercise his rights. The system tried all in its ability to prevent his hearings. In addition, the system did not allow him to have a defending attorney. These situations led to Cast ro writing down a speech that he would use to defend himself because that was the only hope left. On his appearance to court, he delivered the speech â€Å"History Will Absorb Me.† In this speech, he highlighted his justification for organizing the attack. Castro made it clear that his inspiration to fight for the freedom of Cuba came from the Cuban hero Jose Marti4. Marti spent his life advocating the freedom of Cuba and left behind many publications that Castro used for reference. Castro considered Marti his master, as he highlighted in his long speech during the trial. According to Castro, the revolution had all justifications that it would need. The Cuban people were suffering without any intervention from the government. While the Cuban people were perishing in poverty, Batista continued to impose taxes with some aimed at helping America settle its debts. In the speech, Castro elaborated the extreme abuse of power of Batista’s regime. Being a lawyer, he quoted the constitutional clauses that the prosecutor was using against him and declared that none of them described what he had committed. In his explanation, there was no government in Cuba but rather a dictator. The fact that no government existed invalidated the document they called a constitution in all the clauses mentioned5. Strategic objectives Essay Strategic objectives are the core components of strategic planning. Strategic planning involves establishing the direction and scope of an institute or an organization over a lengthy period of time. This process specifically gains advantage over the dynamic environment through structuring the resources and the abilities of the people involved to achieve a certain aim. Therefore, strategic objectives become the center of all the process. Statements of visions are usually wide and do not specify a clear path of actions of achieving them. Mission statements however are more specific, explaining the reasons for the existence of the organization and the how it achieves competitive advantage in the market. Strategic objectives are the elements that come in to make the mission statements operational. They provide clear guidance on how the organizations will move successfully to the drawn overall objective or goal. In other words they help in the achievement of the purpose of the organization. This essay will shortly evaluate Google Inc. in terms of strategic objectives. Google Inc. In order to understand well this concept, I will use Google Inc. as an example to study its strategic objectives and the way it has achieved its management goals. Google fundamentally has its success on a human resource that is managed well. It has focused on developing the potential of the employees who will in turn give success to the company. Google Inc. has seen it right that with the changing market dynamics, businesses are focusing more on developing a competent human resource. This year CNNMoney. om reports that Google Inc. is voted 6th as the best employer in the USA (100 Best Companies to Work for, 2010). Gupta says, â€Å"†¦a brand that is build upon a culture that is high on trust, low on politics, great at sharing resources and sharing the wealth and full of meaning and significance† (Gupta, 2009). Google’s overall objective is â€Å"To organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful† (Why Google, 2010). The organizational goal and vision of Google Inc. rest on the philosophy of workers’ empowerment. The founders, Page and Brin, endeavored that the company be one that is run by the geeks. The business wing of the same goal is to attract the most excellent minds from across the world to work for the company. These two are the specifics that give clarity to the overall goal, which is to make Google an information source. Discussion From the above observation I find out that Google Inc. is at par with its objectives as concerns the purpose of it existence. It is currently the most popular search engine that provides information to millions of people all across the globe. Google has come up with strategic objectives that enable them to draw periodical goals that conform to the Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time bound (SMART) objectives. Such strategic objectives are; to widen the human resource for anticipated company growth, venture into international markets and to continue going out of the box; that is development of innovative products. Google has captured the whole purpose without showing exactly the specific strategic objectives but through its company philosophy. This philosophy includes the following aspects. â€Å"Focus on the user and all else will follow, Its best to do one thing really, really well, Fast is better than slow, Democracy on the web works, You dont need to be at your desk to need an answer, You can make money without doing evil, Theres always more information available, The need for information crosses all borders, You can be serious without a suit, Great just isnt good enough† (Corporate Information, 2010). These are what it has made those people working for Google be very focused to obtaining a result. The first thing we expect is that the turnover is absent or very minimal, Gupta reports of a rate of 4. 3% voluntary turnover only (Gupta, 2009). Google has also had its revenues growing despite the recent economic recession. The year 2009 first quarter which was announced recently has an increase of 6% higher than that of the same period in the year 2008 which was at 3% (Google Announces First Quarter 2009 Results, 2010). In my opinion this shows that if a company draws clear purposes of existence, backed by a straightforward mission and strategic objectives, it will achieve the overall goal even in tough times.

Womens Rights in Islam Thesis Statement: Women’s rights in Islam is rather still seen to be much more liberated according to the Quran yet subjugated under Sharia Law since the enhancement of Islam. Introduction Since the beginning of time to today’s society, the epitome of the debatable discussions based about the status, position, and the role of a woman have been greatly indicated and reflected by culture, tradition, religion, feminism and misogyny. However, there is a high level of controversy when it comes to the issue of women in Islam that are basically caused from the many misrepresentations and misinterpretations with distortions due to having such a lack of understanding of the Quran and the teachings of Islam stating women in the Muslim societies being degraded or low and living under oppression and subjugation. This paper will discuss and focus on Women’s Rights in the Muslim world in regards to it being much more liberated according to the Quran but yet subjugated under the Sharia Law and to appropriately simplify an easy understanding to the allocated question – are women in Muslim societies really subjugated or are these misconceptions falsely fabricated f rom biased sources? To do this, it will begin with a brief discussion on the rights and status of Women in Islam according to the Quran and Prophetic traditions right from its enhancement through to the Muslim world today with additional information concerning its main violation of Women’s rights, followed by discussions and reasons on the many misconception of Women’s rights in Islam and distinguish the differences between the Quran and the Sharia law, and finally, this report will examine several Muslim countries that will identify the existence and sustainability of Women’s rights within some Muslim countries and distinguish any differences. Overall this paper will support and contend that Women’s rights in Islam is rather still seen to be much more liberated according to the Quran yet subjugated under Sharia Law since the enhancement of Islam. The woman’s question based on Quranic teachings depends very much on how we or the individual understands and interprets the Quranic text. The Quran itself states in 2:228 â€Å"(women) have rights similar to those (of men) over them in kindness, and men are a degree above them†. Afkhami (1995) simplifies this quote from the Quran indicating that in regards to their respective responsibilities, merits, and virtues women and men are equal and Islam does not accept for either of them anything but good treatment and fairness. The roles of a mother within Islam possess such important status over a father according also to verses from the Quran but especially within the Hadith which comes to show how valuable a woman is. According to Baveja (1985), in early Arab traditions, woman exercised great influence over the family and the tribes due to having such a supreme authority with opinions that counted as a great deal within inter-tribal warfare. Though however, due to contra dictory evidence available before the advent of Islam, women were treated worse off as men were given precedence over women, oppression was widespread, and women were degraded and considered shameful. Engineer (1940), El-Solh, Mabro (1994) and Beyer (2001) supports this position with examples such as â€Å"the killing of daughters† all agreeing to the fact that having a boy was much greater to the Arabs as they believed that females were considered as an embarrassment and regarded as a disgrace because they could not fight in wars and they were always captured by the enemy hence the custom of burying the daughters alive was practiced as a simplest way out to kill the daughters. To some extent, women were also kept as slaves; women were not given any share in inheritance and prostitution was rampant. Kurzman (1998), Sonbol (2005), Beyer (2001) and Quran itselfs points out the abolishment of such practices mentioned above due to the establishment and rise of Islam regarding wom en to be more valuable and treasurable and to not be mistreated or shamed. Anwar and Abdullah (2000) argue that despite the equality given towards women since the beginning of Islam, most abuse or mistreatment of women today is mainly due to cultural / traditional factors that are wrongly followed by many Muslim families within the middle-eastern countries which will be explained and looked into further in the last paragraph. Furthermore it is appropriate to also include the differences of Islamic law especially the Sharia Law applied in different Muslim societies across the world which is believed to have also caused such violation to women’s rights in Islam as a whole due to conservative societal norms and interpretations that has become one of the fundamental features to cause the lack of women’s freedom and outright abuse Middle East Quarterly (1997). Even though the role of women and men do differ in terms of responsibilities, virtues and merits, nevertheless, und er the Islamic law women’s rights are empowered and protected, and is certainly no different to rights of men in accordance to the Quran which therefore supports Women’s rights in Islam is rather still seen to be much more liberated according to the Quran since the enhancement of Islam. Ordinarily, the histories of women in general focus on western women and see their history as a way of life as models, against which the histories and lives of other women in the past and present are compared, Sonbol (2005) pg. 3-4. However, according to Kurzman (1998), Hirata (2005) and Abdul-Ghafur (2005), women in the west and their method of gaining rights has taken a long while to overcome which includes their first biggest achievement in winning the right to vote that took place in the post industrial revolution era. Yet nevertheless, Bajeva (1985), Engineer (1992) Muslim Women’s League (2003) and few other sources claim that women in Islam were given their rights 1400 years ago – these include rights pertained to inheritance, marriage, divorce, custody of children, property, evidence, rewards and punishments these rights given to the women in Islam were only recently enjoyed by the west. To examine common misconceptions and mistruths in regards to women’s rights in Islam, it’s important to observe the Quran as well as the Islamic teachings and authentic sources in order to understand the truth behind women’s rights in Islam. Furthermore, Afkhami (1994) and Kurzman (1998) points out the many sharia formulations are based on the human factor as well as such traditions and therefore many rules reflect cultural prejudice of the Persians and the Arabs rather than the just and liberal outlook from the greatness of the Quran. Therefore, based on the information provided above, it’s appropriate to contend and support that despite discovering that certain hadiths and the formulation of the sharia has been the reasons of taking rights away from women due to their own interpretation based on human factors and traditions Women’s rights in Islam is rather still seen to be much more liberated according to the Quran yet subjugated under Sharia Law since the enhancement of Islam. It is for this reason; it is most unfortunate that i n the so called Islamic states, women are seen only in their medieval image, not in the revolutionary Islamic image portrayed in the Quran. They are placed in purdah and relegated to a secondary role within the four walls of the house. Islamic jurists in these countries give more importance to certain doubtful traditions than to the clear statements of the Quran to see women in their own image Kurzman (1998), Engineer (1992) and Anwar, Abdullah (2000). El-Sohl and Mabro (1994) discuss approaches that have begun to surface in a number of Muslim countries that aim to set the issue of gender relations and the concomitant rights of women within the realm of human rights by combining social and political levels which affects women’s status in society. Yet however, the concept of human rights as laid down in the 1948 Universal declaration Of Human Rights is not easy to reconcile with interpretations of the Sharia which emphasises the hierarchical aspects of the Islamic social order , in which the free males Muslim possesses the most rights. Furthermore, given such rulings by male interpreters’ intent on maintaining the patriarchal system with women in a subordinate role, modernist Muslim feminists and human rights activists are arguing that this is not the real voice of Islam. Thus, despite discovering the use of sharia law that Muslim women are living under in certain strict Muslim societies – it is because of this, women are being oppressed and subjugated in these countries. Therefore it is important to understand and differentiate what the Quran says and the approach of the Sharia law however it is appropriate to support and contend that Women’s rights in Islam is rather still seen to be much more liberated according to the Quran yet subjugated under Sharia Law since the enhancement of Islam. Conclusion In summary, the Quran has emphasized many rights given to Muslim women, yet due to Islamic jurists who have formulated the Sharia Law is the cause that has led alot of women to be mistreated, oppressed and subjugated due to cultural and traditional factors that formulate such law. Yes they have gone through phases of allowing some freedoms, yet, they have not been successful for the reason that modernisation is strictly forbidden according to Islamic teachings. This report has examined the role of women and their status according to the Quran and Prophetic traditions, it has also discussed misconceptions based on women’s rights in Islam and distinguished the differences of what the Quran states on the rights of women and what the Sharia Law says about the rights of women, and, it has explored various Muslim societies or countries with women who live under the Sharia Law. Nevertheless, this paper has discussed and considered information for an understanding that appropriately supports and contends as well as responds to the issue based on Women’s rights in Islam. Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, 35, 436-445. The article entitled â€Å"Friendship Expectations of Early Adolescents in Cuba and Canada† is a study done to see whether the emphasis of character education, as in Cuba, or moral education, as in Canada, create different types of friendships in developing adolescents. He purpose of this study is to see how much the Cuban culture, which is interdependent, is reproduced in the children’s idea of friendship. The Canadians were used to compare the results from Cuba to. The author’s hypothesis is that the idea of friendship in Cuba would be more advanced than the Canadian idea, because of the emphasis of interdependence.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In this study there are three hundred Cuban and two hundred and ninety-four Canadian students in grades seven, eight, and nine. The seventh graders are the youngest chosen because that is the first year that the students start a new school in both countries. Both groups off students were taken from large cities in their respective countries. The researchers asked the students to write an essay about what a best friend, of the same-sex, should be willing to do for them, and what makes a best friend different from any other friend. These essays were then â€Å"graded† by two raters using a category of numbers, from 1 (not mentioned at all), to 4 (especially important).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The results of this study were varied between the two countries answers. The responses from the subjects could be described as character admiration, and were much more likely to be used by the Canadian adolescents. An example of this was that the Canadian students said that their friends should be easygoing, and does not make them be someone they are not. In contrast many Cubans responded that they like their best friends because of their willingness to help others, and do things for the good of the group. Some of the ideas that were seen as important to one culture were not as important to the other. For example the theme of help given to a friend was present in 82% of Cuban essays, but only present in 22% of Canadian essays. Also, the theme of similar personalities was included in 97% of Cuban essays, and only included in 38% of Canadian essays.

Defying Societys Norms :: Sports Social Culture Essays

Defying Society's Norms When a person decides to enter a sport that is not traditionally competed in by his or her sex, there are many risks. One of these risks is the risk of getting rejected or ridiculed because participating in that sport is not common. However, if no one ever dared to defy the socially accepted boundaries, then women would not be playing sports. There are girls who defy these boundaries and wrestle or play football in high school as well as boys who enter field hockey. These boundaries need to be broken, even if there is ridicule and risks behind them, because of the benefits of this defiance. Society would not progress if people did not take these risks. Women were not accepted into the field of sport until much later than men. For example, the first women's baseball team was formed at Vassar College in 1865. Initially, a woman's version of competing in sport was Play Days. These days were times for women to gather and play sports. However, there was no competitive element. Women simply worked together in a sport. Once women were allowed to compete in sports like basketball, men were not allowed to watch. These standards seem to be a mockery of the ideas behind sport and the competition that goes along with it. However, if this phase of mockery and controversy had not been endured, women probably would not be competing in sports. Once women gained there places in the world of sports, there were still other obstacles to overcome. For example, during World War II, a women's baseball league was formed. However, the women were not there for the spirit of sport and competition. Their uniforms were cute and highly feminine. They wore skirts. This was a way to attract more spectators and to make sure that women playing baseball did not get to competitive or go against any standards for women of that time. Therefore, even when women were defying society, they were forced to conform in some aspects. This idea has been explored greatly in many films. One of these movies is Girl Fight. Girl Fight shows the story of Diana Guzman, a high school senior who always gets into fights at school. Once she realizes that she could put that energy towards fighting, she wants to learn to box. However, her father does not view boxing as suitable for women and instead continues paying for her younger brother's boxing lesson. CHEMISTRY IN OUR DAILY LIVES Chemistry In Everyday Life Chemistry in everyday life : Our entire universe is made up of matter which is constantly changing forms and evolving into other forms of energy. Chemistry is defined as the study or science of this ever changing matter. The other sciences which we study commonly like biology, physics and mathematics are all dependent on chemistry and are only specific studies under the elaborate subject of chemistry. Chemistry is also seen in biological forms and physical states of nature and we study it in subjects called biochemistry and physical chemistry which help us study these changes. There are many chemical changes which occur around us every day but we are never aware of them. Chemistry in Everyday Life Examples: 1) Water, which is one of the most important part of our live and occupies 70% of the earth's surface is made by two chemical elements, hydrogen and oxygen. ) Soap is an emulsifier which allows oil and water to mix and so the oily mixtures on body and clothes can be removed after application of soap and water. 3) Chemistry is the reason why vegetables are colored. Colored vegetables consist of chemical compounds called carotenoids which have an area known as the chromophore. It absorbs certain wavelengths of light and thus there are colored vegetables. 4) Food is cooked because of the steam that's present either in the water added or that which is present inside the food items. ) Onions make you cry due to the presence of sulfur in the cells which break after the onions are cut. This sulfur gets mixed with moisture and thus irritates your eyes. 6) You feel hungry because of the satiety center in your brain falls short of particular hormones to function and then sends the signal of hunger. 7) You fall in love, get attracted and have a feeling of belonging because of certain monoamines present in your brain which get stimulated through nerve sensors.

Volleyball vs Softball

Petter Tomas ENG 101 September 12th, 2011 Volleyball Vs. Softball Home run! Spike! These are some very different words that mean very different things between softball volleyball. Not only are they different but they can be alike in smaller ways also. They both deal with balls, there both sports, they are both played in the same season. Their different in sizes, both uses different equipment, and are both played very differently. When it comes to the equipment used there are no similarities. There are many differences in the equipment used in volleyball then there is in softball.You don’t use bats in volleyball, and you don’t use nets in softball. The balls used in volley ball are much larger compared to a softball. In softball you use a bat to hit the ball out into the field. In volleyball you use your hands to hit the ball over the net to the other side. The teams don’t compare in sizes. In volleyball there are six people on both sides of the net. As in softbal l there can be nine to ten players out on the field. If you play slow pitch there is usually ten, but if its fast pitch theirs usually nine.Of course since they are completely two different sports that would mean that they have completely different rules on how to play. Volleyball and softball are usually both played around the same time of year, spring time. They can both be played outdoors. Volleyball can be played out doors in the sand or inside a gym. It doesn’t really matter as long as you have a net. When it comes to softball you can only play that outside on a softball field. When it comes to both sports, they are both very different. I rather would prefer to play softball rather than volleyball.To me softball is more of a competitive sport, always moving around the field. There’s more areas to play. Such as pitcher, catcher, hitter. But don’t get me wrong I like to play volleyball for fun also. Softball and volleyball are very different in many ways. But similar in some ways also. They are both great sports to play. So if you like to spike it, or hit a home run, they are both fun sports to play. a-raes end end Hdad beging People are always trying to figure out what sport to play. Some of the most popular sports to participate in and to watch, just happen to be the two sports that I have the most expertise in.I played in both volleyball and softball thought out my young life. I have played in organized league's both in high school and for the YMCA as well. I am using these two examples to show you two differences and two similarities that both sports have in common. In providing you this information I hope it may become beneficial in helping a person that is having trouble deciding which sport is best for them. If their final two choices were volleyball and softball that is. First we will talk about the differences.The first difference that I will discuss will be about a piece of equipment that is used in both sports and has to be u sed to participate and play in both sports. The second difference that I want to convey is what effect fiscal contact has on your decision to picks the correct one. The two similarities that I am going to discuss are that they both can be played with little expense to a person or persons and that both of these sports you have flexibility in the times of the year that you can play and participate in both sports and is a factor in the popularity of both sports.The piece of equipment that may be used as a deciding factor in choosing the correct sport for a person and probably the most important piece is the ball. Its true they both are played with a ball. The differences that I want to bring up are the size of the balls and the way they are made. The softball is harder and made of a more durable core made of a solid polyurethane and. The outer leather is stitched and held together with a nylon thread. It has a circumference of ten inches. Where the volleyball is a lot softer leather an d has a circumference of twenty-five inches.The ball that is used in a volleyball game is hit with your fist and the ball used in a softball game is hit with a bat. The second difference that I think could be a factor in your decision is how much body contact that is involved in both sports. For example, football players often tackle the opposite players to stop them approaching forward. But it is rarely seen in a baseball game.Another major difference is the rule. For instance, it changes defense side and offense side when every three players are out in a baseball game. But it’s totally different from football. You are changed to offense side when you intercept the ball. The last difference is that football players have to carry the ball to touch down but baseba ll players don’t need to do that.
